THE UNION CATHEDRAL STORY
With a heart for building people and building communities, founding Senior Pastor RichieButler was obedient to the call from God to form a community of faith where the Word, worship and work would intersect. Thus, Union Cathedral was born in 2002.
During the month of April of 2002, a group of four families met on Saturday evening at Nathan Meir Consulting Engineering Firm to pray, fellowship and plan for the launch of Union Cathedral. With no denominational support, on Saturday, May 11th, at CityPlace, an assembly of 25 people gathered for the first worship and fellowship of Union Cathedral. On July 12th of that year, Union received its first set of members. Although Saturday at 5pm was a challenge, the members remained committed and continued to worship and fellowship for over one year. During its first year, Union had over 500 people attend at least one Saturday service. In addition, Union was also able to reach over 1000 people on a regular basis through its weekly inspirational communication.
On Sunday, July 6, 2003, Union transitioned from a Saturday worship and fellowship to a Sunday morning worship service at the Sammon Center for the Arts. Union worshiped two years at the Sammon Center until God blessed the church to form strategic allowance with Cliff Temple Baptist Church where Union current worship, hold its ministry activities, and maintain office space. Countless others have made life-transforming decisions because of the ministry at Union.
Union has established a separate 501c3 Union Development Corp; built a successful children’s ministry; host a weekly Bible study; has 14 active ministries, licensed 8 ministries, created an informative and interactive website and email communication system; built a compassion ministry that has served over 500 people through its various programs; established signature events like Easter in the Park, Taste of Union, State of the Union and Union Family Day. Created active ministries like the Health and Wellness, Christian Education, Youth and Children’s, Membership Care, Outreach, Media, Hospitality, Music, Pastoral Care, Technology, Men’s and Women’s Ministry, Compassion and Resource Ministries.
Union Cathedral has and continued to make history by tackling Christianity’s great denominational divide and America’s pre-eminent foe racial division. Union’s has attracted people from Methodist, Baptist, Church of Christ, Presbyterian, Catholic, Episcopalian, Pentecostal churches who are in search of something cutting-edge and relevant. In addition, Union’s racial diversity is not simply a topic of conversation, but a way of life. Union’s rich and rewarding beginning has positioned the church to continue to blaze a trail that defines the 21-century church.
Since the move to Cliff Temple, membership has more than doubled. Union is now in its 6th year of existence.
